Acupuncture involves the insertion of small needles or exertion of pressure (acupressure) on certain points in the body. With acupuncture, when the needles have been placed successfully, the patient senses a feeling of fullness, numbness, tingling and warmth and occasionally some soreness over the acupuncture point. Research data has shown that acupuncture and/or acupressure can be helpful for various pain maladies. The most common complications include infections if the needles are not sterile or complications caused by tissue trauma from improper needle insertion.

If you are considering acupuncture or acupressure, you should seek referral to a qualified and certified specialist.
